They&rsquo;re all over the place, from a few minutes to a few hours. That&rsquo;s just putting artificial roadblocks in front of you in your quest to make the best quality content you&rsquo;re capable of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you&rsquo;re initially recording the show live on a radio station, it isn&rsquo;t like you need to play by anyone else&rsquo;s time schedule. You don&rsquo;t need to be wrapped up on the hour so they can cut to the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Podcasting is on-demand content, so take as long as you need to create a great episode. But once you&rsquo;ve achieved that, be mindful not to drag it out any longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-what-about-listening-habits-amp-average-commute-duration\">What About Listening Habits &amp; Average Commute Duration?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, I&rsquo;ve heard people try to answer the question of podcast episode length by referring to things like average commuter times. Or the time it takes someone to have a shower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&rsquo;t buy that these are relevant to podcast listening because you can stop and start listening to episodes wherever and whenever you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can play five minutes of a show while making breakfast in the morning, another 15 on the trip to work, and then listen to the rest on the way home. Or even the next day or week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s just as easy to plug your car speakers into your phone as a set of earbuds. And now, the syncing up of devices like smart speakers means that listening can continue over multiple platforms throughout the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&rsquo;s very little need to finish an episode to hit stop, and I&rsquo;ve encountered few listeners who feel the need to consume in one full sitting. I just don&rsquo;t think the average commute time is much of a factor here, at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-should-all-my-podcast-episodes-be-the-same-length\">Should All My Podcast Episodes Be the Same Length?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The same rules apply here: you should never stretch something out if it&rsquo;s finished or cut it short if it&rsquo;s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&rsquo;s definitely a benefit to having <strong>some<\/strong> consistency here, though. Loyal listeners will come to expect your episodes to be within a certain length range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you get into that position with a system, process, and routine for putting your episodes together. They&rsquo;re all similar lengths because that&rsquo;s generally how long it takes to present your podcast content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can deviate from that now and then if the content dictates. But having absolutely no consistency in your episode lengths could be jarring for your listeners and prevent you from growing your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could easily give off the impression of disorganisation and poor planning. And that&rsquo;s the opposite of what podcast listeners are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"publishing-schedule-podcast-format-considerations\">Publishing Schedule &amp; Podcast Format Considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To dig a little deeper, let&rsquo;s explore what I mean by &ldquo;content should determine length&rdquo; in podcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key factor is your podcast format. For example, if you&rsquo;re putting together a complex audio drama or documentary-style episode that takes a long time to edit and produce, the chances are that the episode isn&rsquo;t going to be too big. If it is, the time frames between episodes will get very long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This highlights another factor to keep in mind &ndash; your ideal release schedule. If you want to publish each week, then overly-long episodes will take up much of your time. An even more extreme example of this is a daily show. The bottom line is that the more frequently you want to put out episodes, the shorter those episodes will likely get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interviews or discussions might lend themselves to longer formats, but the longer the episode, the bigger the editing and production time. So, only go longer if you know that your schedule can accommodate it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/planning\/how-much-time-does-it-take-to-run-a-podcast\/\">An hour-long episode doesn&rsquo;t mean an hour of work<\/a>. If anything, you could times that by three or four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-flash-briefings-amp-daily-news\">Flash Briefings &amp; Daily News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/business-of-podcasting\/mini-podcasting\/\">short (sub 10 minute) episodes<\/a> is if you want to do a daily news or &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/publishing\/podcast-alexa-flash-brief\/\">flash briefing<\/a>&rdquo; show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These shorter podcasts are becoming increasingly popular on smart speakers, where listeners are building playlists of shows that can update them on their areas of interest on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shows like this are short and to the point by their very nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the content should dictate the creation of these podcasts. The episodes are, on average, only about one minute long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-should-i-avoid-overly-long-podcast-episodes\">Should I Avoid Overly Long Podcast Episodes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably, one of the biggest shows on the planet is <em><a data-lasso-id=\"44224\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dancarlin.com\/hardcore-history-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dan Carlin&rsquo;s Hardcore History Podcast<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &ldquo;biggest&rdquo; works on two levels. New episodes are downloaded millions of times within the first month of their release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, though, these episodes tend to be between 3 and 6 <strong>hours<\/strong> long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This length is perfect for the show&rsquo;s content, which means they are in no way &ldquo;too long&rdquo;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if any podcast runs over one and a half to two hours, <strong>there must be an excellent reason for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a back catalogue of multi-hour-long episodes can put new listeners off checking your show out because it seems like such a big commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But again, you should never feel compelled to cut short good content just for the sake of it. Absolutely not. At risk of sounding like a broken record, your content alone should dictate your podcast length. This data is interesting as a reference point, but it isn&rsquo;t the final say on how long podcasts should be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-podcast-length-data-from-libsyn\">Podcast Length Data From Libsyn<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the length of anyone else&rsquo;s podcast shouldn&rsquo;t be relevant, you&rsquo;re still likely curious about what others are up to. With that in mind, here&rsquo;s some insightful data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, Rob Walch of podcast hosting giants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/websites-hosting\/libsyn-review\/\">Libsyn<\/a> presented these stats on <a href=\"https:\/\/thefeed.libsyn.com\/188-per-the-word-subscribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">episode 188 of their official podcast, The Feed<\/a>. In 2021, Rob analysed shows in the top 200 of Apple Podcasts (we can consider these &ldquo;Successful podcasts&rdquo;). He found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>8% had an average podcast episode length of 22 minutes or less<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>78% had an average podcast episode length of 40 minutes or more<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5.5% had an average podcast episode length of two hours or more<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He then explained that half of the episodes measured were <strong>over one hour long<\/strong>, and the other half were <strong>under an hour<\/strong>. This further backs up the point that no &ldquo;perfect podcast episode length&rdquo; exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-podcast-length-data-from-pacific-content\">Podcast Length Data From Pacific Content<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also some brilliant data put together by Dan Misenser of <a href=\"https:\/\/pacific-content.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pacific Content<\/a> back in 2019, suggesting that podcast episodes, on the whole, are getting shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Based on a sample of&nbsp;18,809,402&nbsp;episodes published between June 2005 and November 2019 (representing&nbsp;637,793&nbsp;distinct podcast series), the mean average episode length was&nbsp;<strong>41 minutes and 31 seconds<\/strong>. That&rsquo;s almost two minutes&nbsp;shorter&nbsp;than the overall mean average length I calculated last year (2018).<\/p>\n<cite>Pacific Content<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But again, this isn&rsquo;t a reason for you to opt for shorter, purely because of an overall trend. As disclaimers on health podcasts often say, &ldquo;This is for informational purposes only&rdquo;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan also found that, when analysing by category, Video Games, Wrestling, and Games had the longest average episode lengths, whilst Language Learning, Astronomy, and Daily News had the shortest. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-podcast-length-data-from-buzzsprout\">Podcast Length Data From Buzzsprout<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Libsyn, fellow hosting provider Buzzsprout also releases their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/stats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">global stats<\/a> on a regular basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring data from over 121,000 shows in December 2024, here are the podcast episode length stats on Buzzsprout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Less than 10 minutes <strong>18%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10 &ndash; 20 minutes <strong>15%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20 &ndash; 40 minutes <strong>31%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>40 &ndash; 60 minutes <strong>21%<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 60 minutes <strong>15%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading \" id=\"h-podcast-length-data-from-the-podcast-host\">Podcast Length Data From The Podcast Host<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We have some of our own data to throw into the mix, too. For example, our show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepodcasthost.com\/podcraft-podcast\/\">Podcraft<\/a> teaches the how-to of podcasting &ndash; the main topic &ndash; but we have focused seasons on things like podcast gear, promotion, and monetization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how long should a podcast <strong>season<\/strong> be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the answer is the same as how long a podcast episode should be: how long does it take to get the message across?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some ballpark figures for average podcast length for seasons are 6, 8, or 12 episodes. It&rsquo;s pretty similar to seasons on the likes of Netflix or Prime. But if you need 20 episodes to present all of your info, then there&rsquo;s your ideal length. But the general theory of podcast episode lengths is simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have 40 minutes of good, on-topic content, and your episode lasts one hour, then it&rsquo;s too long.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you have 40 minutes of good, on-topic content, and your episode lasts 20 minutes, then it&rsquo;s too short.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you&rsquo;re consistent and organised with your content, then it&rsquo;s likely your episodes will fall within a certain length range overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Content shouldn&rsquo;t be made to fit length.
